The 2026 Novel Writing Challenge: My Task #40

Morning all, isn’t it fabulous, the last planning day. i am so ready to jump into this story. Today’s Task has three parts the first two are mostly organizational. So I am checking my pens for ink Which is for the best. I may use the keyboard for most of the writing but when I need notes if the pen doesn’t work when I pick it up during writing, I have a tendency to toss it to the area around the trash can.

Why around and not in?

Because as I get ready to through I remember that all of the pens I am currently using are refillable so they aren’t to be thrown out just put away, so I adjust my aim at the last minute. Then when I take a break I gather them all up and put them in the appropriate basket for refilling. It can become a hazard and it is best if I just check them all before starting. I have tried to train myself to do better but I’ll be honest when I am working and really invested in the story I am telling I tend to forget about pretty much everything else. I know it makes me hard to deal with so I try to find ways to deal with it to make it less onerous on others. Checking the pens before I start, making sure there are meals I can make in a very short time handy so that when I have completely lost track of time as I am trying to help my protagonist break into a forbidden archives no one in the house goes hungry.

As a side note, compound butters are a life saver. I make several, keep them in the fridge and when I have forgotten everything I can slice off a chunk, add it to pasta and have an instant sauce. Note to self, I need to pick up dried pasta.

But beyond the two organizational parts of today’s task there is Part 3, the first sentence. and so…
