The 2026 Novel Writing Challenge: Task #45

Good morning everyone. As we are still (and will be for a while) in the writing phase of the challenge I have another writing exercise posted below. For some of you this will be a fun exercise to go along with what you are writing, others it could be for something else entirely. Or it could be both. We are still looking at character’s with this exercise.

Task #45: Writing Exercise: Focus on one character once you know what character you are going to work with, write a few paragraphs about their fondest dream. It could be something they dream of at night, it could be something to do with their hopes and aspirations. If it is aspirational it could be grandiose or personal.

“One day I will live in a world where the fae are not hunted and their bones ground to create magic potions.”

or “One day I will stop traveling, buy a sheep farm and spend my winters knitting by the fire instead of planning art heists.”

It could also be a fantastical escape they think about before bed so they get pulled into the same dream scape. Tailor the fondest dream to your character and just with the nightmare exercise, use it to dig deep into your character and figure out who they are beyond the confines of your story. It is a great way to add depth to characters and keep them from being stereotype cut outs. Just remember what you know and what gets put on the page aren’t always the same thing. This is information for you to help you better write your characters. Some of it may be good for readers, others not. But that is a different exercise.

Happy Writing.
