The 2026 Novel Writing Challenge: Task #51

Morning all we are starting week three of the writing time of the novel writing challenge but as always we have a writing exercise. Use it or set it aside for later, whichever helps you the most.

Task #51: Writing Exercise – We are still working on characters, as we will be for the rest of March so as always for these exercises, pick a character to write about. It can be one involved in something you are writing or someone made up specifically for this exercise. But take a few minutes to figure out who the character is before you move on. Ready? Fabulous. Today we are going to write about our character’s parents. It can be a biographical sketch, it can be an emotional one where we learn how our character feels about their parents. If your character has no parents, for instance an orphan dropped off at an orphanage within hours of their birth with no note, then you have options. You could talk about the people who raised the child in lieu of actual parents. You could write about the fantasy parents they dreamed they had – my parents were spies on the run from evil government agents and they had to drop me off here so I would be safe – or some other story they told themselves that influenced their life or shows their character and personality in a way you might not otherwise be able to show. It can also be a piece about how they feel about parents in general. Figure out what works for your character and the story where they live and focus on the topic of parents.

As always, Happy writing.
