The 2026 Novel Writing Challenge: Task #55

Morning all I hope you are doing well. It is time once again for another task. As we are in the writing phase of the novel writing challenge the task is again to write according to the schedule you set. I know, The reminder seems pretty pointless, but part of a novel writing challenge is to write the novel. Regardless, we also have a writing challenge. We are focusing on Character building in March so it should come as no surprise that this is a character building exercise. I know. you are all shocked beyond belief. I can hear your gasps from here.

Task #55 – Writing Exercise- Think of a character, any character. Make sure you can see them and know a little bit about them and their role in your story or proposed story. You have them in mind? Good. Now write about their greatest triumph and why they see it as their greatest triumph. This is an interesting one because somethings only seem like triumphs to the person where the rest of the world does not see it that way. It could be something others see as nothing of note, or even a failure. Even if others see it as a triumph the rest of the world may not see it in the same light as your character.

For example scoring the winning touchdown in the big game. (excuses the generics, what I know about football couldn’t fill a thimble). Others may see this as a triumph because he led his team to victory. Maybe they were a hated rival. Maybe that school’s team hasn’t won anything in a long time. However this character could view it as a victory because even though he has no real interest in playing football his father always told him he would never amount to anything. Since his father loved and played football, but didn’t win his ‘big game’, winning was a triumph for him because he accomplished something that was not only valuable in the eyes of someone who thought he had no value but it was something that his father hadn’t managed to pull off and so in his own mind it silenced the criticism.

There are many ways to look at a triumph so give it a good think and see how it would be most useful to you and what it can say about your character.

As always, happy writing.
