The 2026 Novel Writing Challenge: Task #57

Morning all, just wanted to do a quick update for anyone just tuning in. At the start of the challenge we had daily tasks to plan the novel. (Those are tasks 1-40 should you be looking for them). After that we each set a writing schedule and during the writing time I am posting a writing exercise each day. They can be useful if you want to use them with what you are writing in the Novel writing challenge, or just as writing exercises.

The writing phase will last through the end of May which hopefully will give everyone working time to get a full first draft. (I have my fingers crossed on that one, but again as everyone is working on their own schedule don’t feel you have to have the draft complete. You can easily take the tasks at your own pace. May 29th is a Friday and Task #104 if you are keeping track.

For the Writing exercises March we are focused on character based exercises, April the exercises will be setting and description based and May will be additional world building exercises so your world can be as real as possible.

At least that is the plan.

Ans so, we have today’s exercise.

Task #57 – Writing Exercise: Pick a character, any character. Think about their details, their world and their place in your story, if you have one. It can be a character exercise for a character without a story. Once you have them in mind, write a paragraph or two about their biggest blind spot when it comes to other people. Does your character have an unreasonable distrust of anyone with a mustache? Are they a sucker for a red head? Are they always inclined to trust people who have dogs over people who have cats? Decide on a blind spot and then write about why this blind spot exists. Was the first teacher who encouraged him a red head? Was there an evil mustachioed man lurking in his past? Even if they don’t know why they have these blind spots (or don’t even realize they have the blind spot), you do and you know why, Or you will at the end of the exercise.

As always, happy writing.
