The Fifteen Minute Novel 2026: Day 233

I wasn’t quite finished with the story I was telling by the time 2025 ended and so decided to continue it until it reached an ending point. Then I will start a new one. I was hoping to have this wrapped up so I could start April fresh with a new story, but it is taking longer to get to an ending point than I thought. I am going to try to wrap up by Friday though, so we will see how that goes. For now, Penelope’s story continues …

Day 233: Penelope nodded.

Penelope nodded. “I can see how that would be useful for different people from different places.  I can even see how that would change over time, but how does that affect the changes to memory?”

“When I see what they need to see in order to begin their journey, I see their beliefs.  Most seem to believe that they need to learn the magic they are given, mastering what has been laid out before them.  More often lately there is the belief that what has been done is all that can be done.  They simply need to learn it and not develop it in new ways.”

“Oh,” Penelope said.  She finished eating the fig as she thought about it.  More for something to do with her hands while she spoke she broke off another piece of the flat bread and added more cheese and honey to it.  She chewed the bite as she thought about things.

When Emily suggested using her abilities to heal, those she was with pronounced that impossible.  They laughed off the notion.  Yet she did it and following her direction, Penelope repeated the action.  She wasn’t certain how long ago Emily’s memory was created but it looked at least a couple of hundred years old given the clothing and the technology.

‘But Lenore had the same belief.’

Penelope looked at the Guardian as she finished her bite.  “How long ago did people stop leaving memories?”

“Ah time is a funny thing,” the guardian said.  “I do not keep track of it as you do.  I dip in and out of time I suppose you would say.  I am now and then often.”

The comment sounded confusing to Penelope and she frowned.  “You mean you time travel?”

“I mean it is all a pool I can visit the whens regardless of what time the now involves,” The guardian frowned. “It is difficult to explain as you live a linear time and I do not.”

“But those of my time do not add the memories?” Penelope asked instead of trying to figure out how time was a pool instead of a line.

“They have not and it is rare that they visit the memories of the past,” the guardian said.  “Most have teachers who do not use these as tools, preferring to teach in the present.”

Penelope nodded recalling that the book claimed the memories were for those with no teachers.  “But because I visited once I can visit again?”

“Of course, you can go there at will, both awake and asleep with practice.”

“I will have to practice that,” Penelope said.

“Good,” the guardian said.  “I will not expect to see you as you are practicing and I will come up with things I wish to discuss before you return.”

“That sounds good,” Penelope replied.  She found herself growing tired and decided it was time to go.  She wished the guardian goodbye and closed her eyes, opening them again when she lay in her own bed.
