The 2026 Novel Writing Challenge: Task #63

Good morning everyone. Another writing day dawns and we enter the month of April. While we are all writing on our own schedules there is a daily writing exercise. It can be used in conjunction with your writing, separately or simply saved for later but in April we are going to focus on settings and descriptions, and so…

Task #63: Writing Exercise: We are going to start with roads. I know, not always the most exciting thing to write about but very important if you are moving people from place to place. So envision a place in your mind and describe the roads. pathways from one place to another. Are they multiplane highways newly redone so the black of the new asphalt looks like a strip of distilled night and the air is still stained with the scent of tar? Hs the asphalt been grayed out with time and the repairs stand out like black spots? Or are their potholes that could swallow a Buick? The 1980s land yacht styles. Is it gravel, cobblestone or dirt? Or are there no pathways on the ground, elevated pathways up in the trees being the preferred method of moving around? Describe the roads/pathways and their condition. Is it the rainy season when dirt roads are churned into impassable mud cutting off the community? Are their waves of heat shimmering above the summer asphalt? Are they busy with zooming traffic or bumper to bumper traffic jams? Are they only occasionally travelled? Knowing the roads helps you know how travel works in the world you have created. It gives you a rhythm for movement, allows you to see the necessities needed by travelers and helps you shape the physical movement of your story. Picture them and write down the details in a great a description as you can.

As always happy writing.
