The Fifteen Minute Novel 2023 Part 2: Day 59

And so our story continues…

Day 59: ‘But I do need to shop.’

‘But I do need to shop.’ While her spell components didn’t have to be picked up at the markets where others like Marcus picked up their components, she did need regular supplies like food.  ‘And I can’t just clock myself invisible or I won’t be able to buy them.’

Anna looked at the bowl.  ‘I’ll have to look in on Christopher separately.’

While scrying once was easy enough, Anna knew that she had to wait before she could do a repeat of the spell.  Not only would she need a while to replenish her energy, but she would need to let the air clear from the effects of the previous one.  The scrying spell tended to send shockwaves of magic through the air like a stone thrown in a pond sent out ripples on the water.  She would have to let the ripples fade away before she redid the spell or it could affect the outcome.

‘And that is going to take at least an hour.’  Anna stood up and pushed away from the table.  She made herself another cup of tea and sipped it slowly as she ordered her thoughts.  She knew that the reason Marcus was searching for her was because of the Dursa.  As she knew little, Anna didn’t know what help he expected her to be.  She knew the name and little else.

‘But I brought back some books that mention it along with signatures and other things useful for my research.’  One of the main reasons for her research was to find out why her magic changed and was changing.  It wasn’t the same as when she left.  She picked up enough to know that environment and state of mind played a role in the shaping of magic, but she passed her exams and was certified before she left.  She was told that her magic fully matured and was more or less all that it was going to be at that point.  It had fully matured like a wine aged to the point where it was as good as it was going to get and needed to be consumed before it spoiled and was useful only for vinegar.

Her magic should have been locked in place.  Her power level should have remained the same.  While Anna was willing to admit that her circumstances had changed dramatically from the time of he testing, she didn’t know any reason they should be getting stronger.  Yet they were.  She was capable of magic now that she knew she could not have pulled off at the time of he testing.  Anna thought some of it might be the difference in materials.

‘So many variables,’  Anna shook her head.  Her research was in part to determine a viable way of testing or a concrete piece of information that would provide at least part of an explanation. She hadn’t found it in the other archives, even if she had found much that was useful.  She was hoping the information from the Lost City would help.

‘I should probably start with the Dursa since that’s why they ae hunting me now.’ Anna thought about it.  ‘Still hunting me, I suppose,’ she corrected.

She wasn’t sure who the uniformed man was, nor how to figure that out, but he was bothered by Marcus’ inability to find her and bring her back to the capitol.  She could think of no other reason than the Dursa.

‘At least I know the spelled envelope destroyed the tracker,’ she thought.  ‘Unless it was a ploy to get me to take the document out of it’s sealed space so the tracker can be active again.’

That wasn’t something Anna knew how to figure out wither.  She was certain with some effort she could find a way, but at the moment, opening the folder wasn’t important.
