Morning all and happy Friday. Are you ready to see what the last prompt of the week brings? I am, although to be honest, my brain is still trying to outline the mystery from yesterday’s prompt. Nonetheless, timers set and off we go.
Took me a minute to get into this one, and I have no clue where it is going, but I think the set up could be good in a different story.
Friday, April 25th: They split the files into two stacks.
They split the files into two stacks. “Right,” Troy said. “We are looking for any mention of the Garanta Corporation and any file with Mike Wax’s name on it more than five years ago. You two can start with this and I will go and get the rest of the files.”
Dan and Bob nodded as Troy left the room, heading back into the depths of the corporate archives. Troy had no illusions about those two. They were here because they were ordered to assist. He also knew that they were more to keep an eye on him rather than actually assist him. No one expected him to produce any usable information for the case.
While he had a glimmer of a hope regarding Garantha and Mike Wax searching the files for those references were mostly to keep the other two busy. He would, when he returned with the files, search the same as well and if no one found anything he would be disappointed.
‘And I will be because it could help the case,’ Troy thought as he let his steps carry him further down the rows of file boxes. There was always the possibility they would find something which is why he decided it would make the perfect cover.
Troy’s steps carried him to the boxes where the required files were. The files in the stacks he left with the others had not been added to the storage yet so before him was a sheer cliff face of nearly identical file storage boxes. Only the names on them differentiated them.
He looked back towards the door. No sign of the others checking on him. He pulled one of the file boxes they would need down and set it on the floor. He glanced back, still no interest. Troy stepped to the side, leaving the section they were studying. He let his eyes scan the names knowing what he searched wouldn’t be too far from the Garanta files.
He spotted what he was after and with one more glance towards the door, he pulled the box down, opened the top and flicked through the files, reading the tabs at the top of each file. He was quickly able to find what he wanted. Orex versus Domain. He pulled the file, opened it and took out his phone. He took pictures of each page. When he was done. He slipped his phone back into his pocket, closed the file and the box and slipped it back on the shelf.
He stepped back to the Garanta section and pulled a second box. As he slid it off the shelf, Dan appeared in the doorway. Troy swallowed hard and tried not to look guilty.
“Help me with these two,” he said to Dan. Dan sagged and sighed but walked towards him. Troy set the box down on top of the first he pulled and then pulled a third. “I think this is enough to get started,” Troy said. Anything else and it is beyond the five year mark. If we don’t find anything in these then I’ll glance through one of the slightly older boxes,” Troy said. He tried to sound like he was talking to himself. And he might as well have been. Dan nodded absently and then picked up the two boxes in one go as though worried Troy might send him back into the archives. Troy followed him out of the archives and into the file room. Bob stared at the files in front of him. Hand propped up on his chin as he flipped through the pages, eyes scanning the documents for the relevant information.
Dan set the boxes down and went back to his own stack of files. Troy took out his own files from one of the boxes and joined the two at the table.
It was quiet as they worked. The sound of shifting paper and the occasional heavy sigh from either Dan or Bob breaking the silence now and again.
Wonderful ♥️
