Morning all, let’s just jump into our morning writing exercise.
Task #71 – Writing Exercise – Pick a place. It can be a small town a big city, a neighborhood, a church or any place that involves multiple people in some sort of community. Describe this place and the community briefly so you know who they are and what the place is over all. Then create a memorial. It can be a plaque, a statue an eternal flame, or something completely different. Describe not only this memorial but it’s place in the community. Remember even if the memorial is for the sale event, it will not be viewed by everyone in the same light. A memorial commemorating a battle may fill someone with pride while another looking at it may be sad thinking of fallen comrades and family and a third may have hated what the battle stood for. A statue in town could cause as much angst as it does pride. It could also tempt younger members in the community to acts of temporary vandalism like silly hats or painting it colors.
The point of this exercise is not to pick a position but to describe the memorial in whatever form it takes, explain it’s reason for existing and how it came to be there and then twist the kaleidoscope to show all the different ways it could be viewed by anyone who might see it. It is not only an exercise in description but a reminder that very few communities have a singular thought about anything let alone something as emotionally charged as a memorial.
As always, Happy Writing.
