The 2026 Novel Writing Challenge: Task # 77

Morning all, I hope you are having a fabulous morning. While it is another writing day (and will be until the end of May) We have another writing exercise. Today is more description than setting.

Task #77 – Writing Exercise – Pick a person from your writing. It can be a typical resident of the town, it can be a stranger who comes riding in. It could be someone in special holiday regalia that is only seen once a year. Pick your person and describe what they are wearing and why. Is it the head and face covering all residence wear because of frequent dust storms. Is it a thermal microfiber insulated coat to protect from heat? Is it a hat festooned with bells for some sort of festival? Pick your person and their circumstances. Dress them and describe every detail in as much detail as you can. While you might never use this much detail describing a person in your writing, focusing here can often lead to ideas that help you later. Do those very specific hand made buttons lead to the mysterious stranger having connections in a specific town they claim they know nothing about? Is the strip of paint on their shoe a clue to solving a murder? Details can be very helpful and it is good to practice them.

As always, happy writing.
