The 2026 Novel Writing Challenge: Task #84

Good morning everyone. We are still writing so if today is a day scheduled on your writing calendar, happy writing. If not, we still have a writing exercise for you to sink your pen into. For May we ware going to work with dialogue. So…

Task #84 – Writing Exercise – Two people grew up in the same small town and both left after high school. Now, they both find themselves attending the same cocktail party in a place far removed from their small town. Neither of them is hosting, they are both attending. They recognize each other and have a conversation. Their relationship is up to you. They can be old friends, general acquaintances or even old enemies/rivals. Remember the constraints of the situation and how they might affect the conversation as well as how their past might play a role. Also neither of them is on home ground as neither is the host. Do they want to acknowledge their shared past? Is their hometown something not to be mentioned in this setting or something that is celebrated. Think about the situation and the characters. Then, write that initial conversation between them.

As always, Happy Writing.
