Writing Prompt: The rain was slow and steady.

Morning all. I hope you had a fabulous long weekend. Personally, I needed the break. So now that we are back, let’s wake up the brains. Timers set for fifteen minutes and off we go.

No clue where this is going but I suspect Harry is up to something more than sulking.

Tuesday, May 26th: The rain was slow and steady.

The rain was slow and steady.  After the lengthy drought it seemed like a godsend to most.  James looked at it with relief.  The grass was dry and brittle and the fire warnings had been coming daily.  This rain was exactly what they needed.  No thunder and lightning, no real wind, just a slow and seteady fall that could last for hours if not days.

James was hoping for days.

He was tired of living in a tinder box and with celebrations soon to commence he wanted the world saturated with a bit more moisture before fireworks were set alight.  He knew there would be prohibitions on them this year, it had been too dry for too long.  He also knew there would be plenty who would justify ignoring the warnings.  There were every year. It is why they had at least one minor fire each summer when the celebrations rolled around.

This year he knew if anything caught the complete lack of moisture would mean that it was doubtful they would be facing a small fire.  The world could easily be set ablaze in an uncontrollable inferno.

‘The rain should help,’ he thought.

James turned away from the window and saw Harry was frowning.

‘Not just frowning, sulking,’ James thought.  He knew why.  Harry had plans this weekend.  He planned to spend time outside and the rain spoiled them.  He knew that if he said anything Harry would vent about the unfairness of life and how the universe seemed intent on spoiling things for him.  James decided he was in no mood to hear it.

Harry’s plans could be spoiled by the universe as long as the universe gave them the rain needed to prevent a massive forest fire. The fact that he knew Harry and his friends also purchased fireworks and planned to set them off regardless didn’t help his opinion any.

James took his coffee cup to the sink and realized there wasn’t much about Harry he liked. They were roommates more because they were both looking for a place at the same time and one came available.  At the time neither could afford rent on their own so it seemed sensible.

Harry wasn’t the worst roommate James had, but he found the more he learned about his roommate, the less he liked them.  He was now in a place where he could afford a place on his own and had been for a while.  He also knew Harry was not.  James didn’t want to leave Harry in the lurch, but he thought it was time to move out on his own.  He had begun looking for a place.

‘Once I find one I’ll make sure Harry has enough time to find a roommate,’ James consoled himself as he washed out his coffee mug.    He felt the niggling of guilt. James knew he wasn’t the only one who was not a fan of Harry’s.  ‘But he has friends,’ James thought.  Surely one of them would move in with him.’

Jame tried to tell himself it wasn’t his problem.  His cell phone rang startling him from his thoughts.  It was Sandy.  She was a property manager he had been talking to.  She took him to see several places.  He liked the last one and filled out the necessary application.

‘The application was approved,’ the text said.  ‘If you want o sign a lease the place is yours.’

James took a deep breath.  He looked to the couch but Harry went back into his room.

“I’ll tell him when I return,” James thought.  He texted Sandy that he was on his way and went to get his shoes and a rain coat.
