The 2026 Novel Writing Challenge: Task #120

I know, you are probably getting tired of hearing me say this and if you are like me, probably getting antsy about letting the manuscript you wrote sit. But I promise you it is worth letting it sit. There are sometimes things that stay in your head and don’t make it on the page. Or they make it on the page in a way you didn’t plan. The problem is that when you first finish the manuscript, you are page blind. It can be hard to separate the story in your head from what made it to the page. And so we let it rest. Then come back.

Meanwhile, we don’t jump into a fully new story, but try to shift our attention elsewhere. hence the mini outlines. We aren’t looking for many details and thee isn’t research. It is just the idea and the separate parts of the story it could be in the future. Plus it is a really good exercise to get the brain thinking about organizing plot. And so one more, today’s task.

Task #120: Take an idea and break it down into the basic elements. Only add a sentence or two to each point to create a the elements of a basic plot.
