Writing Prompt: The older lady smiled wickedly.

Happy Friday everyone. Let’s jump into it and see where the sentence takes us. Timers set for fifteen minutes and off we go.

I really like the thought of using age invisibility to your advantage when comiting a nefarious act. Not sure what Alice is up to but I kind of want to find out.

Friday, July 10th: The older lady smiled wickedly.

The older lady smiled wickedly.  No one even glanced in her direction.  As far as they were concerned she was invisible.  They paid attention to the younger women with the perky breasts and wide eyes.  They treated the muscle bound gym bros with respect.

They didn’t treat her with disrespect, they simply didn’t see her.  She was merely a moving obstacle in their midst.  She had as much presence as the parking meter.  They acknowledged she was there without seeing her.

‘Probably less than the parking meter,’ she thought.

Which was fine.  She knew that some of her friends complained bitterly that they were practically invisible.  They were once the pretty things.  Others vied for their attention.  While Alice was certain that when she was younger there were people who noticed her, she was never the center of attention.  She stayed near the edges.  She wasn’t unattractive, she had suiters, but she was not the sort to draw the attention of every eye.

‘Maybe that’s why I mind the invisibility less,’ she thought as she made her way through the space.  She didn’t hurry, she didn’t dawdle.  She moved at a pace that was designed to illicit no notice.  There had always been a level of invisibility in her life.  She was background in a lot of places.  She had attention paid to her but often felt it shifting as someone more spectacular moved by.

As she walked she wondered if it was better to be completely invisible and treated as a moving object than to feel someone’s attention actively shifting from her to someone else.  She recalled a boy named Jimmy.  He had been a lifeguard when she worked at one of the shops near the shore during highschool.  She had such a crush on him and he appeared to reciprocate. At least until Charlene came around.  Her bikini clad curves were too much for Jimmy to resist and Alice felt him turn away from her like a flower turning it’s face towards the sun.

‘And given the amount of suntan oil Charlene slathered on she was very shiny in the sin,’ Alice thought with amusement.  She remembered the two getting together and marrying young due to a pregnancy.  She also remembered them divorcing as soon as the child turned eighteen.  Charlene went on with her life eventually marrying someone else and Jimmy faded off into the background somewhere.  She saw Charlene once in a while but lost track of Jimmy long ago.

Alice dismissed the memories.  Her near invisibility was a help now as no one saw her and because of that no one stopped her.  There were no camera’s here.  She made certain that nothing with an impartial eye would record her.  There was nothing photo worthy in the space either so she had no fear of cell phone cameras accidentally catching her in the background.  There was nothing to pose in front of, nothing to see.  It was just a space people passed through.

Because there was nothing interesting in it, the space had no camera’s watching it.  It was an empty spot.  She entered it from an area that was equally unwatched.  Admittedly, she had to actively take out the cameras so her arrival would not be noticed. That was the first test actually.  She took the cameras down for the first time a year prior.   She then watched and waited to see how long it took before they were repaired.
