The 2026 Novel Writing Challenge: Task #143

Morning all. Still working through our editing, but never fear, there is a writing exercise for those not editing or needing a break, So…

Task #143: Edit your Chapter 17

And now for the writing exercise. Currently we are working on a combo of description and meaning. Each day there will be listed an object. The goal is to describe it in as much detail as possible and then to make this every day object somehow extremely important. It can provide in some way or another, a vital clue for solving a mystery, the object that sparks a long buried memory or a symbol of something that provides much needed insight. Or any other meaning you can think of for a story or scene (either potential or actual).

And so today’s object is…a pen

I know, pretty everyday item, but think about both the meaning and the object. Is the pen engraved with initials or a special type of pen? Is there something strange or memorable about the ink. Is it a cheap ball point with a promotional logo on it? Think about how you want to use the item before the description and then make the object into a tool you can use.

As always, happy writing.
