Writing Prompt: The votes were tied.

Morning all and welcome to Friday. Shall we see what the last prompt of the week brings? Fabulous. Set the timers for fifteen minutes and let’s see what storylines develop.

I love the something is not right vibe this story gives off. I also think it could be a fun character to play with. An outsider thrown into something strange.

Friday, September 4th: The votes were tied.

The votes were tied.  Dan stood at the edge of the crowd and watched the supporters for each shout.  Each time a slip of paper was pulled from the box a cheer would go up from that candidate’s supporters while boos echoed from the opposing side.

Dan had only transferred into this school that morning.  He missed the voting and wasn’t entirely certain what the voting was for, let alone why anyone was so excited about who won or lost.  In his old school there were a few who cared about their elections but it was generally those who thought some sort of student government would look good on their college applications.  There were no cheers and boos as thee were here.  The winner would sit in on meetings and he supposed get information first but they all knew that the positions held very little in the way of power.

Here it seemed like the entire student body believed that whoever won would have access to the nuclear launch codes.

He found it a little bizarre.

‘Maybe it is some sort of intense popularity contest.’

The morning classes he attended weren’t enough to let him know.  They were enough to let him know that this school was definitely a different place than his old one.  The classes were more advanced and even though it was technically a public school they seemed to have their own way of doing things that didn’t exactly match up with any public school he attended prior.

At this point, Grayson High School was his eighth new school.  He was promised that this time they would be staying in one place for him to finish high school. He wasn’t sure he bought it but didn’t want to argue so it let it slide.  It was a promotion, but they were all promotions.  His father believe the only way to go was up and when the company was a global one it meant that promotions often came with transfers.

There was never any discussion.  His father simply came home wearing a wide victorious grin and announced that he received another promotion.  They all congratulated him and once the new destination was revealed, went to pack up their lives.

His mother worked remotely and took her job with her.  She had the same job she had when he was born and each time she simply took a few days off for the move and then once they were in their new place she opened up her laptop and got back to work. His father went off to his new job, with the new title and he got to know another school.

They may have told him they would be here until he graduated, but he also knew if a promotion came his father’s way, they would once again pack up and leave.  ‘Only two more years,’ he told himself.  If they moved again or not, he had only two more years living at home and then he could let them move without him.
