Good morning all. While we spent most of the year breaking out and writing a manuscript, hopefully completing first edits and getting the manuscript to our first round of readers, we are now preparing to write a 50K word manuscript in one month. We went through our story idea and Friday we broke out our first chapter. I scheduled that for a Friday because knowing exactly where to begin a story is sometimes an issue, at least for me. Do you start in the middle of the action or do you show the calm and placid lake before the first stone gets thrown in?
Choosing exactly the moment to start can take longer than really any other chapter. So we did it on a Friday. That way I could think about it all weekend and decide if that was where I wanted to start, truly, before I set up my chapter two. While today’s task is to write a sentence describing chapter two and add a few bullet points below about what you want to include,
I recommend reading through your notes on chapter one, making a choice about whether or not that is where you want to start and then start blocking out chapter 2. (I also recommend copying the chapters into one document and then reading through them repeatedly as you go. Sometimes things will occur to you to add or shift as you work and it is easier to do. Remember when the first of November hits we will be going full tilt into this manuscript with little time for research so add in notes about your research, site links file names for photos. Leave yourself a trail to make sure all the information is at your fingertips while you work.
