Writing Prompt: He sneezed.

Morning all. Let’s just jump in and see what comes of today’s sentence, shall we? Timers set for fifteen minutes and off we go.

I love the short sentences that can go anywhere. I never quite know where they are going to take me when I start typing. Kind of fun. More so now I think since I have been doing the outline planning for November.

Thursday, October 29th: He sneezed.

He sneezed.  It was a violent sneeze that shook his whole body and bounced him up onto his toes.  He blinked feeling dazed.  The urge to sneeze came upon him so suddenly.  Usually his sneezes had at least a little warning.  He blinked to clear his eyes and then sneezed again.  And then three more times in rapid succession.  He backed away and kept backing even as his nose went off again.  His eyes were tearing up so badly he was blindly moving away.

He heard questions from some of the others.  He assumed they were asking if he was okay, but he couldn’t answer.  He moved out of the house as fast as he could.  The door slammed behind him.  Finally, feeling the fresh breeze on his face he could breathe again.

It was a snortling sort of breathing though as any time he sneezed he ended up feeling stuffy for the next five minutes.  Still he drew in breathe deeply.  Sneezing so much made him feel as though he had just run a marathon.  For a moment all he could do was stand and draw in air, letting his lungs regain their normal breathing pattern now that they weren’t trying to expel foreign matter.

It had been a long time since he sneezed like this.  He wasn’t entirely certain what set him off.

He heard the creak of the door behind him and looked over.  The rusty springs would have done any haunted house proud.  Jason was standing in the doorway.  He had a strange look on his face.  It wasn’t one that seemed to radiate concern for him.  More like he was the bearer of bad or at least awkward news.

“I’m fine,’ he said looking at Jason’s face.

“Yeah, that’s great,” Jason said. “But Jones is pretty upset Sam.”

“Jones is upset?” he said.  He could hear his stuffed up nose distorting the words a little.

“You wrecked his shot,” Jason said.  “He had it all lined up and the intro down and then…” Jason shrugged.  “He thinks you ought to go back to the motel and double check the equipment for tonight.”

“The equipment?” Sam repeated.  His nose was beginning to clear.

“Yeah we got the owners to agree to lock us in tonight so we can record the spooks?”

“I remember,” Sam said.  “I just didn’t know there was extra equipment we left behind.”

Jason looked at his feet for a second.

“There isn’t any equipment is there,” Sam replied.

“No, but Jones is pretty mad,” Jason said.  “And I don’t think he wants to risk you coming tonight.”

“You know I didn’t want to come in the first place,” Sam said.  “Jones just needed me to edit and didn’t want to pay me so he invited me along.”

Jason wasn’t certain what to say.

“You know,” Sam said.  “I drove up on my own and I can just as easily go home on my own as well. Tell you what, when Jones gets back to town, have him call me and we can discuss editing fees.  Enjoy your ghost hunt.”

Sam shook his head and turned, stomping off the porch and into the yard.  He found his temper rising. Jones was a friend of a friend and at the moment Sam wasn’t feeling too friendly.
