Morning all and Happy Friday. I hope you had a fantastic week. Are you ready to see what the last prompt of the week brings, story-wise? I am so let’s just jump into it, shall we? Fifteen minutes on the timer and remember, no stopping to second guess yourself, just write.
This is not where I thought this was going to go when I started. I was actually expecting something to do with baking but the words just came out differently…
Friday, October 30th: Butter melted slowly.
Butter melted slowly. She watched it in the pan. At her place she kept it in a butter dish on the counter. Kyle kept his in the fridge. He was horrified by the thought of leaving it on the counter exposed to the elements. No matter how many times Alice pointed out that the glass butter dish protected the butter and just kept it at room temp the thought still bothered him.
He went on and on about food spoilage and all sorts of diseases and bacteria, some of which she knew had nothing to do with food. She was pretty sure one of the bacteria strains he mentioned came from a zombie based video game he liked.
So she was using the cold butter. And it was melting much more slowly than she was expecting. Finally it was melted and she poured the bowl of scrambled eggs into the pan. She set the bowl down and began to whisk, making sure to break up the eggs as they cooked so they would be smaller and creamier at the end. When they were ready she put them on a plate. She meant to take the plate to the table and then split it between them but Kyle walked in and simply took the plate.
She looked back toward the table but he had disappeared back into the bedroom, pausing only to pick up a fork. Alice frowned as she began cleaning up. She tamped down her frustration. He wasn’t going to the main bedroom but the second bedroom. His gaming bedroom.
Alice heard the door close. She finished washing up and put away the things she took out so they could have breakfast together. She didn’t bother cooking the bacon or making toast. She just put everything back and grabbed her bag.
She went out to her car and got in, backing out of the space and leaving the parking lot. As she left she realized she was done. She knew if she said anything to Kyle, he would think it was about the eggs. It wasn’t. This morning was just the cherry on top of the I am so done sundae that was her relationship with Kyle.
They were planning to eat breakfast together and then go out. She managed to make it across town and park in the lot in front of her own apartment building when her cell phone pinged.
‘I’m surprised he noticed I left,’ she thought as she reached for the phone. Usually when he decided he was in game mode he didn’t notice anything.
She looked at the phone and nearly snorted at the message. “What happened to the bacon?” he asked. She stared at the screen wondering if he still thought she was in the apartment with him. The cell pinged again.
“I’m in the middle of a mission and can’t stop, can you bring it in?”
“I guess he does think I am still there.” Alice stared at the phone and thought about ghosting him. He knew the plan for the day and she reminded him of it earlier and he promised there would be no gaming until they came back.
Instead, she decided she wanted a nice clean break, not something that might linger while he figured out she was done with him. She texted him a short message that left no doubts and hit send.
A moment later another ping came in. “So no bacon?”
