The 2026 Novel Writing Challenge: Task #42

Good morning everyone. As you may recall we are in the writing phase of the challenge. My schedule has me writing for one hour each week day on my story. Or at least that is how March is set up. I will be reevaluating at the end of the month and setting up April’s schedule. March is pretty easy actually while there is St. Patrick’s day, there really aren’t any holidays that affect my schedule. Easter may throw off April, but for now March looks like smooth sailing.

Admittedly now I feel like I have jinxed myself.

No matter. As everyone has their own schedule set for the writing portion, we have a daily exercise. Perhaps it will help you in your writing, perhaps it will simply get you started thinking about writing. Since we spent a lot of time on plot and story, I set up this first section of writing exercises to be heavily character based. And so

Task #42: The Writing Exercise

Think of a character. It could be your protagonist, a side character, the character you used for yesterday’s exercise, or someone completely unrelated to any story you have yet devised. Picture them in your head. Now write a paragraph or two about their favorite item of clothing. Be descriptive and explain why it is their favorite item of clothing. Is it the frayed battle armor that no longer fits and is displayed in the corner because one of the decorative elements his friends mocked managed to turn the spear that would have killed him? Is it an oversized sweatshirt that has been washed so many times it is as soft as a cloud and perfect to smooth out a bad day? Show us the item and explain why it is a favored piece of clothing.

My Task with today’s bout of writing (along with my current word count) will be posted momentarily. Happy writing!
