Morning all. I hope you are having a fabulous morning thus far. Mine is going pretty well actually. Have you ever had one of those mornings where everything sort of slides into place? It rare for me but today is one of those days. Kinda hoping it lasts the day to be honest (and yes I know we have yet to reach 8am but I can still hope). But for now, the morning prompt. Timers set and off we go.
It took me a bit to figure out where this was going and it very much needs cleaning up before it could be of use, but it is an interesting idea to play with.
Tuesday, March 3rd: He handed me the folder.
He handed me the folder. “This is everything we have,” he told me. I took the folder. It was depressingly thin. I nodded and he turned to leave.
“How long do I have,” I asked.
“Forty-five minutes at the outside, although I would appreciate you not cutting it fine.”
I again nodded. He resumed his course towards the door. This time I didn’t stop him. I opened the file and read through the documents. The board meeting minutes were easy to scan through and looking over the past few meetings I could clearly see Evan building his case.
He wanted sole control of the corporation. I could see the set up. The little digs at each of the other members of the family. The seeds of distrust being planted. It was well done. I couldn’t fault him on planning or execution. He seemed to only be able to work on three people at at time though. Only after one of the family was ousted did he start adding seeds of distrust for a new one. It was a rotating system with one family member falling out of favor at a time.
Evan of course bought up their shares after the board stripped them of power. Thus far my name had not made it to the list, but I knew that time was coming. I simply wasn’t high enough on the totem pole for him to worry about. ‘Not yet at least.’
By the time I made it through the minutes and knew who the next few targets would be I knew that Marcus left the document storage area. Feeling like time was fleeting I nipped back into the shelves. I walked quickly, eyes scanning file box names and dates. I found what I needed fairly quickly. I didn’t bother taking the files back to the table. I lay the files on the floor between the rows of shelving and used my camera to take pictures of each of the pages.
It wouldn’t stop Evan’s takeover of the company. At this point I doubted anything would. It would however allow me to get out with my reputation intact. I could sell my shares and walk away free and clear.
I just had a limited amount of time to do it.
I put the files away and hurried back to the table where I left the minutes. I closed that file and checked my watch. Twenty six minutes had elapsed. I knew Marcus would worry and as I had what I needed I moved towards the door. The relief on Marcus’ face was almost embarrassing.
I handed him the file, nodded and kept moving. Both of us wanted me to be gone before anyone noticed. I exited the building and kept walking. I reached my car and pulled out of the lot. I knew part of the forty-five minutes would include the blank spot in the cameras.
I turned them off before I pulled into the lot, pressing the button before I came into view. The cameras would be off until I once again reached that blind spot. I reached it, counted to thirty to be sure my car was out of range and pressed the button to reengage the cameras.
I was well aware that Mike had several shady bits in his past, but occasionally it came in useful. I didn’t know how he arranged the cameras, but I was glad he did. I drove home and only when I was back in my apartment did I call him to tell him that I no longer needed the blankness. He told me the mechanism would be removed within the hour. I didn’t know how and I didn’t ask questions. I was just hoping there would be no trace of me in the building today. My plan hinged on it.
