Morning all. I hope you are having a fabulous morning thus far. Let’s jump into our day by getting the brains warmed up with another prompt. Are you ready? Fabulous. Timers set to fifteen minutes and lets get going.
Oh I like this. Not sure where it is going but I like the set up. Just need to figure out what is being stolen.
Tuesday, July 7th: A section of fence was missing.
A section of the fence was missing. He stood across the street still hidden in shadows and looked at it, studying the gap. It was exactly where he would have put the gap to gain entry. Exactly.
Mike looked around. The area had seen better days. Many of the fences that once added privacy or security to a space were missing boards. Some were broken showing where someone or something slammed into them and no repairs were ever attempted.
Others were just rotten. He saw one where the nails were still holding firm to the cross piece, even though they were quite rusted, but the board it self split long ago, the pieces falling to the ground and disintegrating into the dirt.
This hole looked different. It looked as though the boards were removed deliberately.
‘And in the exact spot I would have chosen.’
The fence was around a storage facility and it was conceivable that someone else wanted to burgle it. He thought about the job. It wasn’t one he wanted to do, not particularly. He thought it was hinky. His boss thought it was hinky. Unfortunately, someone was putting a lot of pressure on his boss to do the job and if it didn’t get done there would be problems for all of them. His boss asked him to do the deed. There were a lot of complements in the request. He knew he was good. He knew everyone knew he was good, it was why he got a lot of the jobs he got. He also knew in the realm of his boss, Tommy felt he was expendable.
‘And he wouldn’t have helped me out by removing the fence boards early.’ For one, it wouldn’t occur to him to help anyone he hired. They could either do the job or they couldn’t. For another, it wasn’t a good idea to mess with anyone’s job.
While Mike would have chosen that spot, there were others. Some that weren’t as good for the job as this one, but were better for scoping out this piece of fence from the other side to see if there were any traps. Mike decided this was a better idea.
He snuck around to a different section of the fence, on the other side. It was farther from his ultimate goal, but still allowed him access.
He told Tommy he would be doing the job next Thursday as that was the best day. He wasn’t even supposed to start looking into int until this upcoming weekend. He told Tommy he had to finish another job. All of which was true but his part in the other job wrapped up early and he came straight here. It was only Monday. He planned to simply scope out the lay of the land to get a better feel. He also liked taking a look before anyone knew he was looking.
He crept up to a different section of fence. The boards were rotten around the nails and it took very little effort to pull them off the nails and set them to the side. The trees were thicker on this side and there were no sightlines. The boards came off with only soft scraping sounds. While he knew the one guard in the office wouldn’t hear, he waited to see if anything else noticed.
There was nothing and he slipped through the gap.
