The 2026 Novel Writing Challenge: Task # 142

Morning all and happy Monday. We have another task for the day and a new writing exercise. And so…

Task #142: Edit your Chapter 16

Writing exercise: In August we are going to work on descriptions and added meaning. Each day I am going to list an object. I will add almost no details so you can make it your own. Once you describe the item so that anyone reading it can see exactly what is in your head, write a section explaining why this item is important. And not just important, vital to your story. It is the clue that lets you figure out the murderer, the essential component of a spell, the symbol of kinghood in a strange kingdom, or the start of a personal argument between neighbors in suburbia. Whatever sort of story you can put the item in, give it a starring role, even if it is a mundane object.

Today’s object: A statue

The size is up to you. It can be a grand memorial in the center of town, tucked away in a park or cemetery or it can be something that serves as a bookend n a shelf. Everything is up to you. Just describe it and give it meaning.

As always, happy writing.
