Ames fights his rival for charge of the dig site and is chosen to lead the dig. There is a timing issue as they have to excavate before the next rainy season as there is the possibility more flooding will destroy it and the area is prone to rockslides anyway. He argues that it is more Pre-empire than early empire and Devan is very angry that he loses out. Ames prepares his team.
