The Fifteen Minute Novel 2026: Day 116

Morning all and welcome to the Fifteen Minute Novel.  Here I take the start of a story idea and work on it for fifteen minutes a day.  I started with an old writing prompt that interested me, cleaned it up a bit to fit the basic outline of the story I want to write and then set aside fifteen minutes each week day to see it grow.  Each morning’s writing starts with the last sentence of the day before.  And so now we have the story of Kasca…

Day :116: Kasca shivered and wanting something else to occupy her thoughts, she unlocked the shop door and turned the sign to open.

Kasca shivered and wanting something else to occupy her thoughts, she unlocked the shop door and turned the sign to open. She didn’t have long to wait for customers.  There were several lingering in the street outside and entered as soon as she stepped away from the sign.

The morning was a busy one.  Customers came in a steady stream and mixed in were her deliveries.  She Directed the deliveries to the storeroom regardless of what they were.  By noon, her mattress was placed on top of her newly purchased medicinal supplies, and her foodstuffs were mixed in with herb bundles.

Sorting through what was for the shop and what was for herself would take a little time and be done once she closed for the evening.  She had enough stock still in the shop to make it thought the day.  Everything else could wait.

Kasca was in constant motion and even had to prop he door to the workroom open so she could shift between the front of the house and the workshop.  She made it through the day and by the end of it, Kasca felt she had actually found a rhythm.  While a shop assistant would help with those who just wanted ready made tinctures and ointments, she wasn’t doing too badly and had already replaced the coin she spent that morning.  She locked the doors and took her cash box with both it’s coins and its trade slips upstairs.  Once it was safely away, Kasca returned to the store room and separated out the items for the shop from her personal items.  She made certain to rid all of the items from contamination before moving them and was relieved to see less contagion than she expected.

The evening was well advanced and her belly cavernously empty by the time all of her personal supplies were upstairs and the door between the shop and the apartment was firmly closed and locked.  Kasca then began putting things away.  She had a small meal consisting of fresh items rather than travel rations and despite the still mostly empty apartment, she felt herself settled for the first time since her arrival.

After eating, she went into the bedroom.  She moved the mattress into place and began tucking the sheets in and making the bed look warm and inviting.  While she would use her traveling blanket now, she would need to make certain to have warmer covers before the winter arrived.  The blanket would be fine for the spring weather so she had time.  Once she finished altering the new to her garments she would have time to stich together a quilt in the evenings and provide herself with a proper winter blanket in time.

‘First things first,’ she thought taking out her small travel sewing kit and the new garments.  Kasca took them to the living space and lay them out.  She thought about the shop below and decided looking into other apothecaries to see the prices wouldn’t be a bad idea.  In addition, she also wondered about the boy she treated.  She knew that the potion she gave him would work, but the situation was so odd she was concerned.

‘A little look in shouldn’t be too much an invasion,’ she decided.  Kasca set the clothing and sewing kit to the side and retrieved her scrying bowl.  She then settled herself and let her sight wander through the town.  Surprisingly finding apothecaries was difficult.  She knew that the rampaging disease would have hit them hard as they attended the sick and became contaminated themselves.

It was just what happened and why magic and her decontamination spells were so important.  Kasca let her magical sight roam through the city.
